Where does your firm operate?
We operate primarily in the province of BC & Yukon with clients across Western Canada.
How did you enter the industry?
A fellow UBC Commerce graduate had referred me to London Life when I was backpacking through Europe. It was timely as I was exhausting my savings and starting to use a credit card to get home. I was hired in Vancouver and transferred to Greater Toronto Area in 1987 when the city was booming.
What is something that people do not know about you?
I think I’m an open book so there isn’t much but I do have a passion for music and have created my own Top 10 since 1980. Interesting exercise over the years as it often triggers fading memories.
What is the biggest lesson that you have learned in the business?
Stay humble and be careful how you treat people. Though I initially thought being emotionally charged was a good thing, I now believe it is much better to be a good listener (something I continue to work on).
What are you hoping to do with The Benefits Alliance Group?
Support the development of more education and advocacy programs that will help our industry find its voice.
Do you have insights about the industry that you would like to share?
We need insurers and insurers need us (advisors) to best serve our clients. Engagement makes us both better.
