What inspired you to enter the industry?
Working for an insurance company was not something I was planning to do. Fresh out of College, I was hired as an underwriter and quickly knew I wanted to make this my career. Over 30 years later, I still enjoy what I do.
Who is your mentor?
I have two, both of whom were senior members of the insurance company I worked with. Jake Hilberdink was my Vice President of Group Benefits and was a great leader. He built a strong management team and provided us with the knowledge and autonomy to do our jobs. His leadership propelled us to become a formidable force in the same group market. He had an open door policy and took time to listen to everyone, regardless of who you were or the position you held.James Norris, was our Director of Group Sales. Jim was an “ideas” guy and was always looking for ways to be different. He believed the “status quo” of group benefits was not the future. He always looked to push the envelope and I admired his vision on where the benefits market was going.
What are some things that people don’t know about you?
I am an amateur historian and collect Canadian stoneware and glassware. As young boy growing up in rural Eastern Ontario, what originally started as childhood treasure hunting quickly turned into a life-long passion. So much of our history is found in the items used by the families that came before us.
What are the biggest lessons that you have learned in the business?
We do not sell insurance, we sell a service; and there is a solution to every problem!
Do you have insights about the industry that you would like to share?
This industry is constantly changing, and you must alway be thinking ahead. If your organization operates reactively then you will always be behind. Proactively trying to predict where the industry is heading will place you at the forefront of change. Progress waits for no one!
