We’re learning about Joe Leger, President of Cornwall Group Benefits Inc.
Where in Canada are you based?
Oakville, Ontario
Please introduce yourself.
I bring deep expertise in the benefits industry, having served as both an Account Manager and Underwriter with one of Canada’s largest insurers. My experience enables me to deliver professional recommendations and innovative solutions tailored to clients’ needs.
When not seeing clients, I enjoy vacationing with my wife, Ash, spending time with our dog, Nova, playing hockey and watching the NFL.
What do you appreciate most about being a Benefits Alliance member?
I feel that our industry has a big gap in terms of advocacy. This was a driving force to us joining. In addition, I am looking forward to being a part of a network of the best group benefits focused companies in Canada.
What is your favourite part of your role?
Helping people. This is the reason that I initially joined the industry. What gets me out of bed is making a positive difference to both internal and external individuals.
How do you define success?
Upholding our company mantra by being one of Canada’s most trusted organizations in the area of group benefits by focusing on decreasing cost, reducing company liability, streamlining administration, and eliminating confusion.
What are the biggest challenges you face in your role or in this industry?
Growth. It is difficult to grow. I also feel that upwards pricing pressure combined with increased employee pressure is leading to companies having challenging conversations regarding their benefits. No matter what our clients do, the coverage is inadequate and pricing is increasing at a rate past budgets. External market pressures are also contributing to this.
How do you manage work/life balance?
With intent. I think we are all capable of managing this. It simply comes down to if someone is prioritizing it. I am very fortunate to have such an educated, motivated, and dedicated team to work with. Without them, balance would not be possible.
What books/resources do you recommend that every business person should check out?
Traction, Let go of the Vine, Learn to Love Selling.
What advice would you give to people who want to join this industry?
As opposed to advice, I would ask some questions. What are their motivations? Do they believe Insurers do more good or more harm? How do they define success? Let them self discover if this is the right career path. It was for me.
If your friends/family/colleagues were to give you an award, what would it be for?
Dependability. I like to feel people know they can count on me to provide the unvarnished truth with the best intentions in mind. I have also been told I am a great educator.
If someone would make a documentary about you, what would be the title?
“Overcoming adversity: All of us have a story”. Mine is filled with reasons why I should never have been successful. I look at my adversity as a strength.
