Dylan Hines, Business Development Manager, Greenshield- Benefits Alliance

We’re learning about Dylan Hines, Business Development Manager at GreenShield.

Where in Canada are you based?

Paris, Ontario

Please introduce yourself.

My name is Dylan Hines. I’ve spent my near decade in the industry with two different carriers, largely focused on the sales and service side. I did get my start in the mailroom at a boutique carrier and did a brief stint in underwriting as well. I’m an avid home-cook, I coach high school football in Brantford, and play some rugby for the Harlequins RFC.

What do you appreciate most about being a Benefits Alliance Preferred Solutions Provider?

Benefits Alliance presents a really great opportunity to network and share ideas in a supported environment. BA understands the importance of relationships and the human element of our business, so we get to have some fun along the way.

What is your favourite part of your role?

This is two-fold for me. The world of benefits is always presenting new challenges, and no two days look the same. On a more macro level, working at GreenShield means everything I do is in pursuit of our Social Impact mission. I get to wake up every day and know that my work will directly create opportunity for us to impact Canadians in a positive way and drive Better Health for All.

How do you define success?

Success is in the process, not the outcome.

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role or in this industry?

Our industry is filled with ideas, tools, and products that can do exactly what most are trying to achieve – helping people live healthier lives. Whether it be mental health, return to work, or just speaking with a doctor. What our industry needs are more impactful ways to deliver these solutions. Better access, more convenient services meeting plan members where they are, better integration to avoid fragmented healthcare experiences. This will deliver better health outcomes.

How do you manage work/life balance?

Make the most of weeknights! Travel lots. Eat good food.

What books/resources do you recommend that every business person should check out?

Start with Why – Simon Sinek. This was given to me early in my career by a BA member actually. It was very helpful in shaping the way I want to build my career.

Greenlights – Matthew McConaughey. An easy read with concepts applicable to career and life in general.

What advice would you give to people who want to join this industry?

You’ll have to field a ton of questions from friends and family about every type of insurance OTHER THAN group insurance. But seriously, it’s a hidden gem built on trust and relationships.

If your friends/family/colleagues were to give you an award, what would it be for?

A lifetime achievement award for time spent on the grill!

If someone would make a documentary about you, what would be the title?

“Life as a Sad Colts Fan” (hoping for a happier sequel)
