This week we’re learning more about Mike Sanderson at CapriCMW Benefits Inc.
What inspired you to enter the industry?
Following my post secondary education, I spent some time evaluating various careers that might fit my skill set. I always felt that my core competencies were in numbers and problem solving. The insurance industry offered a vast number of roles that focused on problem solving. Helping people has always been my guiding principle in career development and kept me engaged in an evolving industry.
Who is your mentor?
It’s hard to say any one person. Over the years I have learned so much about what it means to be a true professional. Bruce Burnham, Rob Campbell, Barry Mount and Gary Hepburn are a few that come to mind. I can’t tell you how many times I witnessed genuine acts of kindness far beyond their professional obligations.
What are some things that people don’t know about you?
I am a passionate outdoorsman. Nothing excites me more than getting off the grid and embracing the beauty of nature. Some of by favorite pastimes include fishing, snowboarding or a long bike ride. At the end of the day, you might find me sitting around the campfire playing a little diddy on my harmonica.
What are the biggest lessons that you have learned in the business?
People appreciate honesty
Do you have insights about the industry that you would like to share?
Most recently, observing the incredible evolution in the benefit industry as the labour market becomes more broad and a whole new perspective on what employee rewards mean. While challenging, it reminds me why I started in the business. My passion is in helping people/organizations craft unique solutions for their unique situations.
