This week we’re learning more about Bill Zolis at Penmore Benefits

What inspired you to enter the industry?

I have always been someone who loves to help others. The benefits industry creates a great environment where you’re helping many people every day. Group Insurance and Retirement plans do not get the sexy recognition they deserve until you need them.

Who is your mentor?

I have had many mentors over the years. It started way back as a summer student at Crown Life (David Young and Gary Priestman). More recently, John Bowden and Brian Callery. All were different in their own way. When they talked, I listened and learned from the best.

What are some things that people don’t know about you?

Love to garden, which comes from my European roots. Cheer on all Toronto sports teams. Taught aerobic classes way back at Crown Life and during Covid taught a weekly virtual class to Penmore employees which was fun. I brought out my old handmade “Chart Busting Hits” “Sweat it out” cassette tapes. A blast from the past. I try to set a good example for my two daughters to follow as I was taught by my parents. Since the tragic death of my son-in-law, my daughter has taught me many life lessons which I share.

What are the biggest lessons that you have learned in the business?  

Technology is moving at lightning speed but showing you care, and being honest and respectful are more important in my opinion. This to me is common sense. This in return will create long-term clients. Hand deliver a Life Insurance, and AD&D cheque to the beneficiary and offer your ear. Most are shocked when we offer this. Treat clients like family. You must consistently educate yourself so you can add value to your clients.

Do you have insights about the industry that you would like to share?

This is a great industry where I would like to see more young folks come into the business. As Brian Callery would say, “People grow old, get sick and die”. This will not change.
